Foreign Trade in Figures

Fiji is open to foreign trade, which represents 117% of the country’s GDP (World Bank, latest data available). Trade remains very much controlled by the government, and customs duties are relatively high, with an average applied tariff rate of around 8.3% (World Bank). Furthermore, non-tariff barriers - such as the restrictions on import licenses, several different import taxes, and tax incentives offered to local exporters – contribute to hindering foreign trade. Fiji’s main domestic exports include sugar, garments, and fresh fish; while imports are led by mineral products, vehicles, plastics, textiles, and wheat (data Statistics Fiji, 2022).

According to data by Comtrade, in 2022, Fiji’s major sources of imports were Singapore (25.9%), China (15.7%), Australia (15.6%), New Zealand (13.5%), Malaysia (3.9%). The main destinations for exports were the United States (21.0%), Australia (10.5%), Tonga (6.8%), New Zealand (6.2%), and Samoa (3.3%). Fiji has a number of free trade agreements, and the government launched the National Export Strategy (NES) to increase the level of exports.

The country has a structural trade deficit that has been growing in recent years. In 2022, Fiji exported USD 1 million worth of merchandise against USD 3 billion in imports; while concerning services exports stood at USD 1.3 billion vis-à-vis USD 753 million in imports (data WTO). According to the World Bank, the country’s trade deficit accounted for 21.1% of GDP in 2022, from 27.2% one year earlier. According to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2023, domestic exports stood at USD 1.34 billion (-2% year-on-year), whereas imports totaled almost USD 7 billion (+5.8% y-o-y).
