Main Useful Means of Transport: Surrounded by the sea, Taiwan is reliant on maritime shipping for most of its supplies. According to data from the Ministry of Transportation and Communication’s annual report, in 2019 the total sea freight traffic volume stood at 69.3 million metric tons, with an increase of 5.6% compared to the previous year. The country also recorded 78,392 incoming and outgoing vessels (+4.2% y-o-y), and a container traffic of nearly 15.3 million TEU (-0.2% y-o-y), with the Kaohsiung Port accounting for the vast majority of containers (68.1% - although Taiwan is home to seven international ports).
There are 1,065.0 km of railway in Taiwan, with the high-speed rail system accounting for 350 km. Rail transport stood at 7.3 million metric tons in 2019, whereas 2.3 million metric tons of goods were carried by air (-6% y-o-y), of which around 1 million metric tons where goods in transit.
The road network of Taiwan consists of 43,120 km of roads, with approximately 20,000 km of highway networks. Being an island, goods are transported by road only for internal trade.
